What is multimedia?

Multimedia is a technology that allows the integration of text, data, images, graphics, audio, video, animation into computers in a digital form. It provides new ways of reaching information to the user in a better and effective manner. Picture (graphics), sound (audio) and movies (video) are included. These three types of multimedia information are captured and digitized by the input devices so that the information is ready for manipulation by the computer.

Multimedia is a combination of text, graphics, audio, and video. Multimedia is a new trend in the field of computer science. Since it can combine many media into a single computer application, it is called multimedia. This enables computer entertainment tools, educational tools, and business tools to be used.

The computer stores multimedia information in a variety of standard formats. We can play or display multimedia information on the output devices. For example, to play a sound file, we need speakers or handphones. Under certain circumstances, the computer needs specialized hardware so that it can connect to the output devices. For example, to connect a speaker to a PC, we need a sound card (with newer computers nowadays this card is available)

1. Text-

Text is an important part of multimedia. But still the design and content of multimedia text are different from other types of text such as newspaper text and text of books. The extent to which text is used in a multimedia project depends on what subject it works on. Or what is its content? Since many types of fonts, colors and combinations can be displayed in a computer, and the end result is better than printed text.

2. Graphics-

Computer graphics is about making, presenting, correcting, and displaying pictures with the help of a computer. Graphics is an integral part of multimedia through which we can better display information as a picture. For example, if you want to teach young children with the help of multimedia, then we can illustrate an example very well through pictures because, for young children, it is very difficult to describe the new concept with text. In a multimedia application, which is designed for young children, it is more effective if the description of its text is given along with a picture of a horse. Without a picture, it would be difficult to tell what the horse looks like.

Pictures, photographic images, and other artwork are called graphics.

Type of graphics- There are two types of computer graphics. These are:

  • Line drawing
  • Images

Line drawing

These are drawings and examples in the form of 2D (two dimensional) and 3D (3 dimensional) images using mathematical representations of common objects such as lines, circles, arcs, etc. For example, the picture of a chair can be made with the help of lines and arcs.

The field of computer graphics that work on such pictures is called generative graphics. Generative graphics are widely used to create illustrative images. An important application of generative graphics is CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing). Nowadays, CAD packages are being used extensively in designing models of aircraft, ship, and building structures. The biggest advantage of using CAD and CAM for these applications is that any change in design can be immediately modified.


These are graphics and photographs made up of a group of pixels, arranged in 2-dimensional matrices. The area of ​​computer graphics that work with these types of pictures is called cognitive graphics. Cognitive graphics and image processing techniques are both widely used in applications that work in the recognition and classification of pictures. For example, image databases, in which people have fingerprints, are nowadays being used in Criminal Investigation and Identification.

3. Animation-

The animation is the most dynamic form of multimedia. Animation provides a dynamic movement to the object, which is not possible with graphics. For example, if a bird is seen flying in the sky, the digital image of a flying bird will be shown by the graphics, while in the animation we can actually see the bird flying on the PC monitor.

To create an animation, a series of still images are recorded in different positions of drawings, objects, people, etc., in which a little movement is moving. Whenever the animation is played, it does not look like a static image; rather, it combines and creates the illusion of motion.

4. Audio-

Computer audio works in developing, recording, and playback audio with the help of a computer. Audio is a very important part of multimedia because, in many situations, sound proves useful for a better understanding of information. In some cases, the sound is the only way to give the desired information. For example, the barking of a dog is called it’s barking,’ and it can be identified by sound.

Speech, music, and other types of sound are called audio. Audio elements are used to improve the general multimedia environment.

5. Video-

Computer video works in recording and displaying sequences of images. Each image of a sequence is called a frame. For a full-motion video, at least 20 to 30 frames are displayed per second. It is an important part of multimedia because it is very helpful in showing concepts with movement.
